Key things to know
A move is generally a qualifying life event
Moving to a new home in a new ZIP code or county, or to a new state, can let you enroll in or change plans outside Open Enrollment.
Prior coverage is usually required
To qualify based on a move, you generally need to have had qualifying health coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before the move. There are exceptions, such as moving from outside the U.S.
The window is limited
You typically have 60 days from the move to choose a plan. Reaching out before you move can make the transition smoother.
Plans are local
Individual plans are tied to where you live. A plan or network from your old state usually won't carry over to your new one.
Moving for a short time may not qualify
A temporary move, like a vacation, generally doesn't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep my current plan after I move?
Often not, especially if you move to a new state. Individual plans and networks are based on your service area.
Can I sign up before I move?
In many cases you can report a future move and select a plan ahead of time, so coverage starts after the move. Hollen can help you with the timing.
